During the recently concluded transfer window, Gonzalo Higuain was heavily courted by Arsenal. It was rumored that Real Madrid had agreed with the fee placed by Arsenal, but the player and the latter club could not settle on personal terms. Pipita (Higuain) chose to join Rafa Benitez’s Napoli side, while Arsenal broke their transfer record fee during deadline day as they captured the signature of Gonzalo’s former team mate at Real, Mesut Ozil.
Arsenal started off their season with a 1-3 loss at he hands of Aston Villa. This lead to most fans and pundits to criticize Arsenal as a club. Since then, the gunners have won all of their games, including 2 Champions League qualifying ties against Fenerbache and a 1-0 win over rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Mesut Ozil was proving to be worth every penny while Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey have shown massive improvements in their game.
Group F consisted of Arsenal FC, Borussia Dortmund, Napoli and Marseille, fans and pundits labelled this cluster as the “group of death” for this year’s UCL group stages. The group started off with a pair of 2-1 wins for both Arsenal and Napoli, setting up what would be a pivotal game.
The match was hyped by analysts due to the Higuain factor (he didn’t play though, as he injured his calf–or thigh?–) and the fact that these two sides will battle to see who gets the top spot in their group. The match-up looked good on paper, but when it was time for the lights to shine bright, it was Arsenal who dominated their vistors.
Mesut Ozil scored his goal for the gunners after he smashed the ball into the net in the 8th minute (Ramsey assist) and Giroud scored on his birthday after 7 minutes, when he and Ozil orchestrated a majestic give and go maneuver.
Arsenal are now top of their group, while Napoli and Dortmund are tied at 3 points each.
Next up for the gunners in the UCL is the ever so mouth watering clash with Borussia Dortmund. If you love offensive football, then don’t miss that game folks.
